Stock refers to part owner ship of a company. The term stock and share are generally used interchangeably.

However , it must be noted that the term 'stock' refers to part-ownership in multiple companies.

companies issue shares to raise capital to run the business 

Whereas, shareholders invest in shares to receive benefits of growing business and enjoy the profits.

Share holder don't really own the entire corporation.

Instead, shareholder own the shares that are issued whereas corporation own the assets.
